MALPRACTICED PRINCIPLE #14

“Develop a Passion for Learning”

MEG CAPSON was elated. The definitive agreement was finally signed. Six months of negotiations had ended. As the company's new head of innovation, Meg had braved a steep learning curve to develop the company's first strategic partnership with a potential competitor. To get this sort of experience was exactly why she'd left her former employer. Learning new techniques and skills, and new philosophies and approaches, was what made her heart sing. And there was so much more to learn, so many more challenges to embrace, and so many more opportunities to explore. The possibilities were endless and her passion for learning seemed to be perfectly suited for turning those possibilities into realities. What a great company she worked for and what a great job she had, she thought to herself. Now, it was time to celebrate.

She arrived at the ninety-fifth-floor bar of the John Hancock Center in downtown Chicago just as the sun was setting. Her staff was waiting in a reserved corner of the bar overlooking Michigan Avenue. She greeted them with high-fives and hugs before settling into drinks and lively conversation. The five people who reported to Meg had worked day and night during the due diligence phase of the deal, and Meg was very appreciative. She toasted each one of them, offering personalized thanks for their sacrifices and superb work. She was feeling euphoric when the company's CEO, Wade Downs, arrived with two other executives, the company's CFO and general counsel.
